Total testosterone is the total amount of testosterone in a given amount of blood. Often measured in ng (nanograms) per dl (deciliter). This is the most common test ordered when assessing the testosterone level. Unfortunately, this test can sometimes be deceiving, as much of the testosterone in a total testosterone test is not available for use by the body. To make matters worse, the amount of testosterone available for use becomes less and less as we age.
